Guided Walk Uncovers Chembur Gaothan's Hidden Histories This Weekend
A new guided neighbourhood walk by former journalist Prayag Arora-Desai invites residents to look past food trails and rediscover Chembur’s layered past – from Trombay Island coastal settlement roots to today’s rapidly changing suburb. The roughly 2.5 km morning walk winds through Chembur Gaothan lanes with Art Deco details, vintage jaalis, abandoned wells and shrines, including a temple complex on land donated in 1764 and a banyan linked to the old Vadavali village name. Desai also flags disappearing local names such as Little Malabar Hill and surviving ones like Lal Dongar, while touching climate, flooding, reclamation and public spaces such as Ambedkar Garden. Mid-Day notes upcoming slots this weekend.
