RBI Staff Quarters Project in Chembur Could Impact 210 Trees

A major development proposal in Chembur is sparking conversation around growth versus green cover. A proposed Reserve Bank of India (RBI) staff quarters project on a 10,000 sq m plot in Chembur could affect 210 trees in total, with plans indicating 101 trees may be felled and 109 transplanted, while 161 trees are expected to remain on site.

The affected species reportedly include peepal, jamun, mango, gulmohar, coconut, and other mature trees, making this more than just another construction update for the neighbourhood.

Authorities have stated that due process was followed, including public notice procedures, and a Miyawaki plantation on part of the open space has been proposed as an environmental mitigation measure.

For Chembur residents, this project highlights an increasingly familiar urban dilemma: infrastructure and housing growth versus preserving the suburb’s already pressured green spaces.

As the project moves forward, many will be watching closely, not just for development, but for what it means for Chembur’s environmental future.
