Mumbai Monorail Misses May 7 Deadline, Chembur Wait Continues

The resumption of Mumbai Monorail services between Jacob Circle and Chembur via Wadala has been pushed past its May 7 deadline. Sources within MMMOCL (Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited) say the system won’t be ready until at least end of May.

The hold-up is a pending second round of safety inspection, being conducted as a special precautionary measure following the series of technical glitches that led to the monorail’s suspension in September 2025. A retired metro rail safety commissioner has been appointed to inspect rolling stock, signalling systems, fare gates, and scheduling before it can be cleared.

The monorail, suspended since September 20, 2025, previously carried up to 18,000-20,000 passengers daily. Once reopened, operations and maintenance will be handled by Hyderabad-based Power Mech Projects for a five-year term.
Chembur commuters will have to wait a little longer.
