BMC puts Mahul, Govandi and Mankhurd at the Top of its Pollution Watch
The BMC says it will focus its pollution-control efforts on Mahul, Govandi, Shivajinagar, Mankhurd and BKC, which it has marked as sensitive areas. Additional Municipal Commissioner Avinash Dhakne said methane released from old dumping grounds, heavy vehicle traffic and dust from stone quarries towards Navi Mumbai are the main causes of pollution in these areas.
He said wet and dry waste segregation and waste-to-energy projects are under way, and power generation is expected to start in the next two to three months.
Dhakne said short-term measures aim to keep the city’s AQI below 150, while keeping it under 100 will need long-term steps. These include monitoring road dust-control vehicles and stopping dust from construction sites. He has also asked corporators to send suggestions on pollution control.
