From OLPS Chembur to the Grammys: Shankar Mahadevan
Long before “Breathless” and the Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy chartbusters, Shankar Mahadevan was a Chembur kid with a veena. In a 1999 Rediff chat he said he was born “in a place called Chembur” and studied at OLPS, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School. There, he later told The Telegraph, he “participated in all musical activities in school.” Trained in classical music from the age of five, he went on to study computer science engineering at Ramrao Adik Institute in Navi Mumbai and worked as a software engineer before music took over. Then came Breathless (1998), decades of film hits, a Padma Shri in 2019 and a 2024 Grammy with Shakti.
