Ghatkopar Sewage Plant Picks Up Pace, With Chembur Set To Benefit
The BMC has stepped up work on its 337-million-litre-a-day sewage treatment plant at Ghatkopar, a project civic officials say will benefit residents of Ghatkopar, Mankhurd, Govandi and Chembur.
The civic body has set a December 31, 2026 deadline for laying the liquid pipeline needed for secondary treatment of sewage, with the entire project targeted for completion by March 31, 2027. Around 1,000 workers have been deployed at the site since the first week of October, and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, who inspected the plant on Thursday, directed that the extra manpower stay until the work is done.
The plant uses Sequential Batch Reactor technology; treated water will be reused, and the project is expected to improve coastal water quality. It is one of seven STPs the BMC is building across the city.
