Chembur Parents, note the new Minimum Ages for Nursery to Class 1 Admissions

Chembur Parents, note the new Minimum Ages for Nursery to Class 1 Admissions

If your little one is heading to preschool soon, there’s a new rule to plan around. The Maharashtra School Education Department has issued a government resolution fixing minimum ages for admission from Nursery to Class 1. It applies to every school in the state, whether State Board, CBSE, ICSE or IB, so it covers Chembur’s schools too.

The rules come in step by step, and in each case the child must have completed the age by June 30 of the admission year:

Nursery (Balvatika-1): 3 years, from 2027–28
Junior KG (Balvatika-2): 4 years, from 2028–29
Senior KG (Balvatika-3): 5 years, from 2029–30
Class 1: 6 years, from 2030–31

Children already enrolled in Nursery to Class 1 in 2026–27 aren’t affected, and students moving up after passing their class are exempt. School heads can also allow up to 15 days of relaxation in the age limits.

The state says the change brings uniformity, because boards had been using different cut-off dates, and it follows the National Education Policy 2020 and the Centre’s advice that Class 1 starts at 6-plus. Parents of children born in July, just after the cut-off, should plan their nursery admission year with this in mind.
